Keynote Address

Operationalizing the KSA's for Simulation Facilitators: The Key to Simulation Success- Elizabeth Horsley (Flex Space-The Village)
Simulation as part of health professions education is now the rule rather than the exception. Scholarship around simulation pedagogy and research is abundant, however there still lacks a relative dearth of information and simulation facilitator training and on-going development.   Drawing on evidence-based best practice standards, this presentation will explore the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for facilitators to ensure high quality, effective simulation-based educational activities.  Practical and low-cost ideas for professional development for facilitators will be discussed as well

10:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m.

Vendor Fair, Networking and Refreshment break

10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

Unlocking the Puzzle of Creating Simulation Scenarios- Yvonne Galbraith (Flex Space-The Village)

This presentation will engage learners in a step-by-step format applying the phases of simulation to develop a template for designing in person and virtual simulation scenarios. Learners will have the opportunity to evaluate their options for modalities to create meaningful simulation scenarios on fixed budgets.

 11:40 a.m. - 12:40 a.m.

Concurrent Workshops

    1. Healthcare Simulation for Healing through ReconciliACTION- Joelle Lachance-Artindale, Mélanie Burke, Breanna Guertin, Richard Meilleur (Flex Space/Mshibizhiwgamig Ceremony Room- The Village) Max 50 participants
This introductory workshop will explore how healthcare simulation can be easily used to promote Healing and Reconciliation within healthcare settings. Participants will learn how simple, realistic simulation scenarios can address cultural and traditional practices, creating opportunities for dialogue, understanding, and empathy between healthcare professionals and patients. The workshop will focus on practical, straightforward methods that can be incorporated into a variety of healthcare programs without requiring complex resources or extensive training as listed in Call to Action 24, from the National Truth and Reconciliation Report (2). Through group discussions via a participatory debriefing session, attendees will discover how to use simulation to encourage collaboration, improve communication, and foster a more inclusive, compassionate environment when working with Indigenous Peoples. By the end of the session, participants will receive a handout with guidelines on how to implement healthcare simulation for Healing and Reconciliation in their own educational institutions. This resource will outline easy-to-follow strategies for designing effective scenarios, while engaging with campus and community partners. The workshop aims to show that this process can be seamlessly integrated into many healthcare education programs, empowering participants to start small and scale up as they see positive results. Attendees will leave with the tools and confidence to bring this impactful approach into their own work, no matter the size or scope of their institution.

    2. Mission Santé/Mission Health- Sophie Lanteigne, Allyson Beland, Franck Koman (Room D309)
This immersive experience uses the concept of an escape room to teach and reinforce medical terminology in an interprofessional context. Participants, from various healthcare fields (nurses, paramedics, social workers, etc.), collaborate to solve puzzles and face challenges in a simulated environment inspired by a clinical setting.

    3. Nurse Management of an Obstetrical Case- Aysha Hemsworth, Tammy Dwyer, Krista Leckie (D322/D326) Max 20 participants
Join us for an immersive, multi-modal simulation presentation that showcases cutting-edge XR virtual reality, high-fidelity birthing models, online virtual case studies and a comprehensive, integrative learning experience aimed at transforming nursing education. Attendees will observe and interact with, team-based approach featuring RPN and RN students collaboratively managing labor, delivery, and complications in real-time, aligned with their respective scopes of practice. Our process highlights meticulous prep work, robust prebriefing, lifelike simulation scenarios, and dynamic debriefing, culminating in an immersivee tour of our lab space. By merging evidence-based practices, next-generation simulation technologies, and interprofessional collaboration, this presentation aims to showcase how experiential learning can revolutionize maternal-child health education and inspire the future of healthcare training.
12:40 p.m. - 1:40 p.m.

Lunch and Networking Vendor fair

1:40 p.m. - 2:40 p.m.

Concurrent Workshops

    1. Innovative Technologies in Experiential Learning- Hilman Yee, Limbs & Things (D322/D326) Max 12 participants
Presenting new technologies which mimic the human condition for cardiac and respiratory diagnostic and assessment; plus mixed Augmented Reality/Task Training within a budget.

    2. Simulation Rewind: Using Feedback and Repetition to Solidify Skills- Jennyfer Leblanc & Jacob Sirois (Room D310)
This interactive session demonstrates how repeating simulations after a debrief improves skills retention and fosters reflective practice. Participants will experience a condensed version of this approach, including video feedback and a repeated scenario, with some elements delivered in French to highlight bilingual teaching practice.

    3. Enhancing Interprofessional Education Through Simulation: Design, Delivery, and Augmented Reality Integration- Kindra McMillan & Jennifer Taun (Flex Space-The Village) Max 45 participants
This presentation explores the design, development, delivery, and assessment of an innovative simulated interprofessional experience titled Sim City. This simulation involves students from Social Service Worker programs, Police Foundations, and Community Justice Services collaborating to manage a simulated child protection referral that requires police involvement. Participants are pre-briefed and subsequently engage in a structured event where they employ de-escalation, risk assessment, and safety planning skills with the assistance of trained actors.

Sim City integrates key community agency staff, including members from Victim Quick Response, North Bay City Police, and Nipissing Parry Sound Children’s Aid, to facilitate a realistic and immersive learning environment. This collaboration ensures that students gain valuable practical experience and fosters community engagement.

In this presentation, we will detail the development and delivery of Sim City, emphasizing critical design features and the effectiveness of this simulation in interprofessional education (IPE). We will also highlight the iterative improvements made to enhance the event’s educational impact. Additionally, we will introduce our current initiative to incorporate Augmented Reality (AR) into the simulation, aiming to further enrich skill development and deepen the IPE experience. This advancement represents a significant step toward integrating cutting-edge technology into interprofessional training, providing participants with enhanced, interactive learning experience.

    4. Gamification as a Novel Method to Enhance Simulation Education- Holly Sarvas, Kyle Mispel-Beyer, Samantha St. Pierre, Alexander Wood (D309) Max 20 participants
This workshop explores the innovative use of in-person gamification to enhance simulation education. Attendees will discover how gamified elements—such as escape rooms, bell ringer exercises, simulation competitions, and leaderboards—can be integrated into an educational setting to improve engagement, motivation, and learning outcomes. Drawing on current evidence and best practices, we will discuss how to design and implement gamified simulation experiences, addressing key considerations like cost, staffing, space, available equipment, technology, and learner numbers. Participants will not only gain valuable insights but will also have the opportunity to experience a gamified simulation firsthand, offering a deeper understanding of how these strategies can be applied in their own teaching contexts. This session is designed to encourage creativity, foster engagement, and spark conversation about the future of gamified learning in simulation education.
