Apr 27, 2017 | Canadore College

(NORTH BAY, ONT.) – Five Canadore College students are headed to Canada's largest skilled trade and technology competition this weekend.

Aircraft maintenance students David Gellately and Jason Lawton from Ottawa, Ont. are slotted in the post-secondary aircraft maintenance competition; building construction student Andrew Swan from Barrie, Ont. will be testing his skills in the post-secondary carpentry competition; and culinary management students Jeffery Robinson and Lukas Zajicek, both from North Bay, Ont., are contenders in the post-secondary culinary arts competition.

“It is an amazing accomplishment to achieve this level of competition alone and we are extremely proud of our students,” said Mary O’Farrell-Bowers, vice-president of academic at Canadore College. “Competing at this level takes a lot of focus, talent, creativity, professionalism and trade-specific knowledge. We will be cheering them on.”

The Skills Ontario Competition offers a unique opportunity for post-secondary’s top students to demonstrate their leadership and technological skills within their field. Winners will be rewarded with medals and some with monetary awards. Finalists will have the opportunity to compete at the Skills Canada National Competition in Moncton, N.B. and from there, competitors could be headed to the WorldSkills Competition AbuDhabi, United Arab Emirates in October 2017.

Canadore aviation students have recorded a number of successes at past OTSC competitions, including silver medalist John Bolan (2009), gold medalist Ryan Spurrell (2011) and bronze medalist Colin Cumming (2015).

The Skills Ontario Competition takes place at the Toronto Congress Centre from May 1 – 3, 2017.
