Eleisha Collins is being nominated for a “Student Who Makes a Difference” because of her passion for educating our community about racial and gender discrimination. To celebrate and honour Black History Month in February 2020, Eleisha researched and assembled educational resources while assisting with organizing the month-long event. In June 2020, she assisted local high school students with organizing the Black Lives Matter peaceful demonstration in North Bay.

As a member of the I CAN LEAD Student Leadership Team, Eleisha is developing a workshop for Canadore students and employees, with the overall goal of educating individuals on racism and oppression. She believes that by creating an anti-racist environment at Canadore we can effectively teach individuals of all races and genders how to combat racist behaviour, including unconscious bias and micro aggressions. By attending the workshop, attendees will gain valuable tools to build awareness, create relevant strategies. Attendees will engage in immediate and critical actions to make the community engage critically in anti-racism, enact anti-racist practices in the community and create a respectful and equitable environment for all individuals. She feels that learning about the unconscious and automatic ways racism presents itself will help one recognize it and take steps to stop it. Eleisha will help individuals start on a journey to eradicate racism and will share best practices for sustained growth and action.

Eleisha is the past Vice President of Operations for Canadore Students’ Council, was a member of the former WE Canadore Student Leadership Team for two years and is a current Senior Leader of the I CAN LEAD Student Leadership Team.

During her time here at Canadore, Eleisha has also demonstrated a strong interest in promoting mental health awareness and is currently the Team Lead for the Cam’s Kids Foundation at Canadore. This not-for-profit organization. aims to provide support to young people struggling with anxiety by helping them cope effectively in order to reach their full potential.

Eleisha is a compassionate and empathetic student who truly believes in helping others, in ending racism and oppression, and she is passionate about bringing awareness to the mental health issues that are prevalent in today’s society.
