For students with past criminal records, these barriers can be particularly daunting, affecting not only their academic journey but also their prospects in the workforce. However, amidst these challenges, a beacon of hope shines through collaboration and innovation.
Canadore College’s Office of Access and Inclusion (OAI) is at the forefront of efforts to dismantle barriers for students facing hurdles due to past criminal records. Partnering with organizations like the John Howard Society of Sudbury (JHS), they are pioneering new pathways through the Record Suspension Program, offering life-changing opportunities for those striving to build brighter futures.
Understanding the Challenges
Erin Plourde, Access & Inclusion Coordinator, sheds light on the significant barriers faced by students with criminal records. From difficulties in securing employment to limitations on international travel, the repercussions of a criminal record extend far beyond the courtroom. In educational settings, requirements such as vulnerable sector checks for placements can further exacerbate these challenges, hindering academic progress and career aspirations.
Before discovering the program at JHS, Plourde dedicated her personal time to aiding students with their record suspension applications (formerly known as pardons), which proved to be time-consuming and expensive.
Plourde emphasizes the importance of addressing these barriers, stating, "Working with students to identify and navigate their potential challenges and barriers truly inspires me every day." Her commitment to ensuring equal access and opportunity underscores the transformative impact of programs like the Record Suspension initiative.
A Lifeline for Students: The Record Suspension Program
The Record Suspension Program offers a ray of hope for individuals seeking to overcome the burdens of their past. Sara-Jane Berghammer, CEO of JHS Sudbury, highlights the organization's longstanding dedication to supporting those affected by the criminal justice system. With funding from Public Safety Canada, the program provides vital assistance in navigating the complex process of record suspensions, free of charge.
"Our mission is to break down barriers and foster a more inclusive society,” affirms Berghammer. “Canadore has been wonderful at getting important information to students and we are currently working with a number of individuals enrolled in different programs.”
For students, the program represents more than just a legal process—it signifies a gateway to new possibilities. Plourde shares the experiences of students who have encountered rejection and discrimination because of their records, a plight experienced by over 20 of the 400 students she supports annually. One participant expresses gratitude for the opportunity to break free from the restraints of past mistakes, remarking, "No longer do we have to be held back by the mistakes we made in our youth."
