Ontario Weightlifting Association’s Scholastic Challenge

The Ontario Weightlifting Association’s Scholastic Challenge was staged Saturday in the main gym at Canadore College’s Commerce Court facility. The contest was hosted by the Norsemen and Valkyries weightlifting club, Canadore’s Strength and Sport Conditioning class, and the Panthers weightlifting team.

 

The two opening male sessions featured the categories 50 kilos to 77 kilos.  The gold medal winners in each were: Connor Bazilsky of Bayside Secondary in Belleville at 50 kilos, Joel Asselin of Sudbury’s College Notre Dame at 62 kilos, Tyler Miller of Nipissing University at 69 kilos, and Brad Janzen, also of Nipissing, in the 77 kilo division.

 

The morning lifting session for females covered the 53, 58, and 63 kilo classes. Melissa Parks of Nipissing University, the winner at 53 kilos, posted the highest female total of the day. She made 55 kilos in the snatch and 67 kilos in the clean and jerk for a final mark of 122 kilos The 58 kilo gold went to Katie Vallincourt of Canadore College; Olivia Talbot of St. Joseph-Scollard Hall was the winner at 63 kilos. Vallincourt totaled 98 kilos, while Talbot finished with a new personal best of 116 kilos.

 

The afternoon female lifting session was for athletes in the 69, 75, and 90 kilo categories. Jamie Reeves of Canadore College was the top performer at 69 kilos. Reeves made 48 kilos in the snatch and 66 kilos in the snatch for a 114 total. The 75 kilo gold went to newcomer Sabrina Picard of Nipissing who totalled 118 by way of 53 kilos in the snatch and 65 in the clean and jerk. The final female gold went to Kyra Breault of ESC Algonquin in the 90 kilo class.

 

Males in the 85, 94, 105 and +105 kilo categories took to the platform in the last grouping of the day. It was here that the Canadore males showed their depth. Brett Sontag of Canadore won the 85 kilo title with a total of 221 kilos. Meanwhile, teammate Kyle Montgomery totaled 217 to take the 94 kilo gold. Liam  

Macdonald of Canadore finished first at 105 kilos for the second year running. Macdonald had the highest lifts of the day, making 110 kilos in the snatch and 136 in the clean and jerk for a total of 246 kilos. Canadore’s Forest Sutherland won the +105 division gold.

 

The trophies for the best kilo- for- kilo performances of the day went to College Notre Dame’s Joel Asselin on the male side, and Melissa Parks of Nipissing from the female roster. The top novice female trophy went to Sabrina Picard of Nipissing, the male novice trophy was won by Canadore’s Cade Nolan the silver medalist in the 77 kilo class.

 

The Ontario Weightlifting Association’s Scholastic pennants were awarded to the top high school and post- secondary teams. Based on points, the Widdifield Secondary squad of Hunter Edmonds, Whisper Gillespie, and Seanna Ashford took the High School pennant. The Canadore Panthers were the best College/University team for the fourth year running. Based on the points of the top two females and four males, Canadore scored 168 points. Nipissing University was second with 160 points, and Centennial College was third with 96.
