Sabrina Ratte is a recent graduate of the Social Service Worker (SSW) program and is originally from Timmins, Ontario. She started her educational journey at Canadore College in the Recreation Therapy program, where she earned her diploma. Following graduation, Sabrina worked for nearly three years as an Activity Assistant at a long-term care home. Subsequently, she gained additional experience working at another long-term care home, serving as a Dietary Aide for almost three years. These experiences, particularly her time working with older adults, equipped her with numerous skills directly applicable to social service work and reinforced her passion for gerontology. Being committed to the field of Social Work, Sabrina completed the SSW program and is now working as a Community Relations Worker at the Cochrane District Social Services Administration Board (CDSSAB).

Reflecting on her experience, Sabrina shares, "Working with seniors has been an amazing opportunity that has taught me valuable skills. This journey began when I finished my diploma in Recreational Therapy. Later, I decided to move into the field of Social Service Work, where I could advocate for change within our healthcare system."

Her dedication to this field has brought her to her current position at Cochrane District Social Services Administration Board: "Securing my job at Cochrane is one of my greatest accomplishments," she proudly states. It was during her placement at the Canadore Research Centre that Sabrina's interest in applied research was sparked. "The most fulfilling part of my placement was exploring the various aspects of research. This experience ignited my interest in potentially pursuing a career in applied research."

Sabrina's interest in research was sparked by her professor's lecture. "One of my professors was discussing research, and it sparked my curiosity to try something outside my comfort zone. I was nervous when I first started, but as the months went on, I learned so many new things that it fueled my interest in research, especially as I work toward my bachelor’s degree in social work."

During her time at the Research Centre, she gained a new perspective on applied research. "I used to think research was just about testing a hypothesis, but I discovered that applied research involves collaborating with community agencies to help them achieve their desired outcomes within the community." Sabrina's experience has motivated her to encourage other students to participate in the Research Centre. "It's a great way to build connections within the community, learn about the available services, and understand the need for these services."

The skills Sabrina gained during her placement have proven invaluable in her current role as a Community Relations Worker. Since graduating, the Research Centre has helped her refine her time management skills, especially when juggling multiple projects. She also frequently conducts research on various services and agencies to provide referrals to community organizations that tenants can access when they’re struggling.

Sabrina attributes her ability to understand community needs and advocate for her clients directly to her experience at the Research Centre. She continues to advocate for her clients and the broader community, and she credits her time at the Research Centre with shaping her approach to service.

The story of Sabrina is a powerful example of how research can transform lives and open up new opportunities for personal and professional development. As she looks ahead, she wants her journey to motivate other students to discover the potential of research and its ability to create a meaningful impact on their careers and the communities they are part of.
