Experiential Learning Showcase: Maryon McCann
Mar 13, 2025 | Experiential Learning

Canadore College is a leader in experiential learning, which is most simply described as “learning by doing.” Canadore student Maryon McCann puts it this way: “Experiential learning is an invaluable opportunity for any student to gain hands-on experience in their respective fields. Students can apply the knowledge they have learned in the classroom to real-world situations.”
Today, we dive into Maryon's inspiring journey through experiential learning at Canadore College – starting with what led her to her chosen career.
“From a young age, creativity shaped my world. I was fascinated by how visuals can evoke emotion, tell stories, and transform ordinary, everyday things into something meaningful. I have always dreamed of turning my love for art into a fulfilling career in design.”
“The Graphic Design program at Canadore is well-regarded and holds a reputation for providing practical, hands-on education,” she shares. “With Canadore’s small class sizes, supportive campus environment, and career-oriented programs, I knew this school would be the right choice for me.“
As a Canadore student, Maryon began to learn the theoretical skills she needed to thrive in her career, ranging from the elements and principles of design to techniques for pitching ideas and receiving feedback.
It wasn’t long before Maryon had opportunities to apply her theoretical knowledge. As part of her program, Maryon completed a work placement with Ontario Northland. During this placement, she assisted with various graphic design tasks such as layout design, resizing media, and creating vector illustrations for infographics and merchandise. She was also able to get real-world experience in practicing time management, following creative briefs, and learning from constructive criticism.
Reflecting on this experience, she shares, “Ontario Northland is a very welcoming and supportive work environment where I was able to grow both professionally and creatively. I was able to gain valuable workplace skills and learn from the Manager of Creative Services. Every project has allowed me to apply the skills I learned in the Graphic Design program in a real-world setting. I am grateful to have been given the opportunity.”
Canadore’s partnership with the City of North Bay also gave students the opportunity to design logo concepts for the City’s Marketing team to consider. “This collaboration gave me the chance to practice logo design in a real-world context and led to the incredible honor of designing the winning logo for North Bay’s centennial celebration.” Maryon enthusiastically describes this as one of her greatest accomplishments to date.
In addition to these experiences, Maryon has also enjoyed opportunities to design and pitch concepts for Canadore merchandise, events, and wall graphics.
“Experiential learning has given me a new view of the design industry,” she says, stating that her experiences have helped her become more confident and efficient. “While I am proud of how far I’ve come, I am even more excited about the possibilities ahead. I hope to continue growing my skills and exploring even more aspects of design.”

When asked if she has any advice for other students about experiential learning, Maryon shared, “Don’t be afraid to ask questions or to admit there is something you don’t know. We are only students after all! And never forget that mistakes are just opportunities to learn and grow.”
“Experiential learning provides a unique advantage for students to graduate from their educational programs more prepared for the workforce. I am forever grateful to Canadore College for presenting me with these amazing opportunities, and to my professors for providing me with the skills and knowledge essential to achieving my goal of becoming a graphic designer.”
