Chinese New Year at Canadore

Feb 22, 2018 | Matthew Reid, 2nd Year Broadcasting: TV/Video Production Student

狗年大吉 – “Wish you luck in the Year of the Dog.”

On February 15th, Canadore College was proud to host its annual Chinese New Year celebration. The event took place in the College Drive cafeteria, and the turnout was incredible. Roughly 80 or so students of Chinese descent as well as families, friends, and College staff gathered for a celebration of the beginning of the Year of the Dog.

Catered by Canton Express, a local Chinese food restaurant on Cassells street in North Bay, the tables were packed and lined with steaming trays of food. From chicken and vegetable fried rice, wanton soup, and the most delicious spring rolls I have ever tasted, everyone definitely left the event just in time to slip into a food coma.

The event had several raffle and prize drawings, allowing all of those present to experience the excitement of being engaged in a communal celebration. The Office of Inclusion & Diversity (especially Katie Fabbro) did a wonderful job at making everyone feel welcomed and gave those that weren’t accustomed to Chinese New Year traditions a taste of a beautiful culture.
