“REC the Dome” at Canadore College celebrates recreation and connection
REC the Dome, a half-day festival organized by students from the Canadore College School of Sport and Recreation, was a resounding success. The event, held at the Canadore Panthers’ Sportsplex, brought together students, staff, and community members to advance the importance of physical activity and recreation. Attendees participated in a variety of activities, and smiles and laughter could be seen and heard throughout the sports facility, affectionately known as the Dome.

“The purpose of REC the Dome was to bring people of all ages and abilities together,” said Michelle Cundari, Professor, School of Sport and Recreation. “It was designed to promote physical activity, inclusive play, and community engagement through a variety of fun, accessible, and intergenerational activities. The festival celebrated the power of play and encouraged participants to try new things, make memories, and build social connections.

A diverse range of activities was offered to suit all interests and abilities, ensuring that participants of all skill levels could engage in a fun and inclusive environment. Participants engaged in a silent dance party, laser tag, various lawn and carnival type games, and demonstrations including Powwow dancing, line dancing, Bhangra dancing and Tai Chi. Attendees interacted and built relationships through shared experiences, while activities that represented various cultures, abilities, and perspectives fostered a sense of belonging and value for everyone involved.

For the students in the School of Sport and Recreation, REC the Dome was a chance to learn how to successfully organize a special event.

“All of us are in rec and leisure, and events like this are going to come up in our jobs,” said Ty Huxtable, student, Recreation and Leisure Services program. “Knowing how to set them up properly and quickly is a good experience to have.”

“It lets us strengthen our leadership skills,” said Sophie Jamieson-Lauzon, student. “It’s also for the community. They’re coming here for a fun event.”

The event received positive feedback from participants, with many expressing their enjoyment as they left the Dome and hoping there will be another chance to “REC the Dome” again next year.
